Liskeard Girls Win Under 16 Football County Cup Final

Liskeard Girls Win Under 16 Football County Cup Final After beating Grasshoppers 4 – 2 in the semi-final Liskeard knew they hadn’t quite reached top gear with that performance and that they were capable of much, much more with the talent that they had in the squad.

Thankfully for Liskeard they saved their best performance of the season for the final as they took the game to Charlestown from the first whistle and never looked back. The linkup play between the front two of Chloe Williams and Lisa Pearce was out of this world, how they used their pace to give the Charlestown defence a torrid time. Rohana Shaharudin and Molly Walsh provided Liskeard with great balance on either flank as they used the width of the pitch to their advantage.

Liskeard’s early dominance was not getting rewarded with the goals it merited in the early goings but as soon as that first goal hit the back of the net any nerves evaporated. It was plucky Helen Ford playing just behind the striker that was alert to a knock down in the box and steered it in to the back of the net to get Liskeard’s first of the afternoon. If Liskeard weren’t already flying they were now and that one goal quickly became two as Helen again was mobile in the box when the keeper spilled the ball and reacted first to scramble it over the line.

The underpinning of Liskeard’s ability to get at Charlestown and not let them out was the hard work and endeavor of Imogen Cooper and Sophie Rogers as they won battle after battle in the centre of midfield. As soon as the pair won the ball they helped the team move and retain the ball with a great range of intelligent passes.

Many would have expected Liskeard to tire in the second half after all the effort they had put in during the first half. Liskeard however continued the second half with the same breathtaking pace as the first as they soon made it three with Helen Ford completing a hat trick with a thunderous drive from inside the box.

An impressive part of the team performance was the organization of the Liskeard defence and their ability to read the game as Rosie Gibson, Heather Wright, Molly Curtis, Xena Warren and Emily Rogers went about their business excellently. The girls worked as a unit and stood up firm to the physical challenge that Charlestown presented.

The icing on the cake was Liskeard’s fourth which saw Chloe Williams getting on the score sheet as she followed in a shot from Helen Ford, which the keeper managed to parry but only in to her path, to then make no mistake from close range. Charlestown got a late consolation goal but nothing was going to dampen Liskeard’s mood as the final whistle rang out.

Liskeard coaches Ian Woodhouse and Adam Sibley were so proud of the girls and over the moon that they were able to show just how good they are as a team on the biggest stage of the season in the County Cup Final. Ian and Adam would also like to thank club sponsor S.A.S & Trewartha’s Plumbing and Heating for all their support this season.
