Frank Wills Salver and Cornwall Bowl finals

05.03.12

West Cornwall Golf Club was the venue for this year’s Frank Wills Salver and Cornwall Bowl finals.

The course as always was in fantastic condition but the howling gale that blew throughout the day ensured that all competitors were in for a battle against not only their opponents but also the elements.

Trevose and Newquay teed off first at 9.00am for the first round of their 36 hole Frank Wills Salver final and at lunch Trevose held a slender advantage being up in 3 games and down in 2.

As the afternoon round progressed Newquay’s Pete East & Bert Harper built on their 4 hole advantage at lunch to beat Trevose pair Tom McIntyre & Alex Graham-Brown 9 & 7 and record the first point of the day. Martin Borg & Jeff Buckley soon evened up the score for Trevose by beating Matt Dixon & Lee Cunningham by 5 & 4. Trevose’s Dave Cowan & Martin Dakin played some excellent golf in the conditions and defeated Newquay pair Rob Randell & Chris Case 3 & 2. Probably the pivotal match was the game between Newquay’s Charlie Phillips & Dave Longbottom and Trevose’s Nick Matthews & Tim Smith.

Phillips & Longbottom had trailed by 5 holes at one point during the morning round and were still trailing at lunch 2 down, but the afternoon was a different story and the Newquay pair gradually fought back to record a win of 4 & 3. With the match poised at 2 – 2 the deciding match was between Andy Hancock & Dave Pryor of Newquay and Mark Durnall & Neil Ivamy of Trevose.

The Newquay pair were in control in the afternoon and closed out the match on the 16th green winning 4 & 2.

It was Newquay’s first win in the competition since 1994 and a delighted Newquay Captain, Rob Kellythorne received the Salver from the County President, Gerry Fitter at the final presentation.

Frank Wills Final Result: (Newquay names first)

Randell & Case lost to Cowan & Dakin 3&2, East & Harper beat McIntyre & Graham-Brown 9&7, Dixon & Cunningham lost to Borg & Buckley 5&4, Hancock & Pryor beat Durnall & Ivamy 4&2, Phillips & Longbottom beat Matthews & Smith 4&3. Newquay 3 Trevose 2

The Cornwall Bowl final, sponsored by CAW saw Tehidy Park take on Trethorne.

Tehidy were on the front foot briefly when Marc Britton & James Jago stormed to a 7 & 6 win over Trethorne pair Darrell Shovel & Gary Shirley but Trethone soon replied with wins from Simon Schofield & Ian Burn 4 & 3 over Danny Chambers & Nathan Andrew and Paul Stanbury & Clive Franklin beating Graham Sandercock & Chris Prisk by 5 & 4.

Trethorne were now 2 – 1 up but Tehidy Park were looking favourites to level the match with Julian Ridge & Bobby Stephens 1 up with two holes to play against Trethorne’s Les Jewell & Dave Bailey. However it was not to be for Tehidy Park and Jewell & Bailey won the last two holes to record a 1 up victory and with it assuring Trethorne an unassailable 3 – 1 lead. With the result decided the final match still out on the course between Tehidy’s Kenny Allen & Treve Harris and Trethorne’s Andy Froude & Miles May was declared a half.

At the presentation ceremony the delighted Trethorne Captain Colin Peters received the Bowl trophy from County President Gerry Fitter.
